A while back I recall being told it can't be done and won't be "Discord". To that, I have to admit, it's not Discord. It isn't designed in a way to profile it's users and it respects privacy. There is still much work to do on this project, but it's in open beta with a web client so people can see how it works before committing to a desktop app download. Mobile apps will come later, if there is proven interest in this platform. I don't care to monitize it. The only thing users will ever see is a non-intrusive "Please donate" badge at most, with the intentions to just keep the maintainer nodes and some official relays running. There are no accounts. There is no way for me to see the messages. It is a platform that respects the user's privacy and asks nothing of it's user's. Anyone can run the entire stack in their own hardware, in private, with no limitations on controlling their data. It is open source (AGPLv3: https://github.com/hyperkubeorg/openarcanum/ And it's live right now for you to check out: https://openarcanum.org I have a community server running that you may join with this community code (good for 30 days): ``` openarcanum-invite:ChACbbppkdJgXT5JFDYAyCMdEiBcigeLKcJMz5_6LKRhT_sSlYXITfl7Mctu2I5hRPmT1hogy8dDt7EjO6KG5Xz-ufvsCFWE8f_yQtaCFFYE8M83UcEiIXdzczovL3JlbGF5LTAxLm9wZW5hcmNhbnVtLm9yZy93cyIhd3NzOi8vcmVsYXktMDIub3BlbmFyY2FudW0ub3JnL3dzKhhBMnJXa1BYRGRkbHVsVC13V1ZTbDg2OHcyEEhhY2tlciBOZXdzIENyZXc ```

Hey HN, I'm Darin. You might know me from my work at Webflow (YC S13) and currently Ploy (YC P26). Sunlight is the way I imagined the Mac working before I got my 1st-gen MacBook Air in high school (2008). I had looked at a bunch of Apple videos of Mission Control (Exposé back then) and somehow decided it worked like an infinite canvas. I even told my mom about it! I guess it stuck with me. Windowing on the Mac is so good it's one of those "if it ain't broke don't fix it" things. And yet, it always felt lacking. So Sunlight reimagines it from first principles: - 355"+ virtual desktop - 120fps, fully native - Multi-touch interactions - Guides, grids and haptics - Minimap - ⌘Tab and Mission Control work as usual - Works with your Dock, widgets and desktop - Collision detection and magnetic windows - Tiling and saved layouts - Deeply customizable - ...and much more (including agent support) coming soon Free and open source, forever. During the dark ages of AI, when Opus 5 was incomprehensible and Codex Ultra was burning all tokens within a day, I decided to give open-source agents and models a try. What I saw was that a lot of the tools I tried were terminal-first, and desktop apps were less common. Additionally, I felt that lately a lot of the agents apps are slowly trying to become “superapps”. They keep adding more and more features that imo are not always useful and make the UI quite heavy and complex. This motivated me to build Wavefunction: A minimal, open-source app desktop app that focuses on the coding experience and tries to reduce unnecessary features. It doesn’t have a built in browser and its computer use functionality works in a VM. I built it on top of langgraph and it’s packaged as a tauri desktop app. Currently, It works with Vercel AI Gateway, OpenRouter, Anthropic API key, Google AI Studio API key, and you can log in with your ChatGPT account or use a local model with Ollama. It also has 70+ connectors. Last, but not least, you can also require ZDR-only models from the providers. If you try it out I would love to hear your feedback! Thanks!

Your colors. Your desktop. I love macOS's built-in solid-color wallpaper shuffle. It's simple, beautiful, and distraction-free. Hey HN, I'm Christian and this is a new OSS project I've been noodling on for the last couple of weeks. Hob is a free, MIT-licensed desktop app for Mac, Windows and Linux that works on your files the way the Claude and ChatGPT desktop apps do, except the model runs on your own computer. It uses open-weight models (currently Gemma 4 and gpt-oss). All your chats and files never leave your system. The only things that go online are web search (can be turned off in settings) and any MCP connectors you add yourself. Main features: - Automatically finds the best open-weight model for your hardware on first install (Mac/Linux/Windows) - Writes sandboxed Python code for ad hoc tools (data processing, document conversion, graphs etc.) - Built-in web search (powered by SearXNG) - MCP support - Image recognition - CRUD to your local filesystem - Works fully offline with no internet Before building this I tried every local AI app I could find, but it seemed each one had different problems. The main thing I noticed is that none of them could do what the ChatGPT and Claude apps do with your files, e.g. read and change files in a folder, look at images, run code in a sandbox, draw a chart. The most advanced thing any of them did was paste a plain text file into a small context window, which basically failed as soon as you had a file larger than a few KB. I couldn't find anything that could easily parse images and bigger PDFs. The OSS solutions that were more advanced all seemed to default to hosted models (either OSS or closed), which defeats the entire point of the privacy that on-device OSS offers. They also seemed to push towards an account/open-core style business. I build it using Electron bridged with llama.cpp in its own process. On initial load, the system will try and figure out if you have a compatible graphics card and if not default to CPU-only (I ran into a lot of issues of graphics card beeing seemingly compatible but then crashing on first query, there's a whole saga to this lol). Code execution happens in a sandbox that can only write to the chat's folder and has no network unless asked (sandbox-exec on macOS, Landlock on Linux and a low-integrity process on Windows). Images go to a small Qwen3-VL model. Dictation is a local Whisper model. The hardest part was definitely to get the smaller models to use tools reliably. Ran into a ton of issues of 4B models happily saying "here's your chart" without ever calling the chart tool or get stuck in an infinite call loop. I spent a fair amount of the work building guards vs tweaking prompts (that didn't really work for small models). I understand the pushback that local models are weaker than frontier cloud models. This is true, but for most tasks for most normal people, I'd argue you rarely need the newest frontier model. From my own evals, systems with 16+ GB of RAM do really well, and if you have a GPU or more RAM, you get very close to what you'll get out of the box with a frontier hosted model. Excited to hear what you think and see how it runs on other systems!

ssh zydra.sh There's no sign-up or anything, and you get a 15-minute of a graphical Linux VM drawn entirely in your terminal. It has a browser, an editor, and it runs Doom. It works best in Kitty or Ghostty. WezTerm and Konsole also work, as well as Sixel and iTerm2 terminals, though with less detail. Text-only terminals support non-graphical apps: shells, editors, and other TUIs. Why? For a few months I ran coding agents in tmux on a VPS over SSH, and it sucked. I couldn't paste images, scrolling broke and I didn't wanna figure out why, I had no notifications for when an agent finished, I couldn't see browsers agents opened to smoke-test, logins drifted between my laptop and the server, I couldn't check in from my phone, and to know what an agent had done five minutes ago I had to read through opaque chunks of tool calls. These issues added up and had me in a limbo: They made my setup bad enough to annoy me every day, but not quite bad enough to stop my real work and fix it. How it works: Zydra is a custom (Smithay-based) Wayland compositor in a microVM with an AMD GPU, implementing a series of terminal protocols that solve many issues but are often ignored: Kitty graphics for windows, OSC 52 for the clipboard, images included, OSC 9/99/777 for notifications, SGR mouse for scrolling and clicks. VNC is limited to sending pictures of the screen and diffing frames to find what changed. In Zydra, apps directly tell the compositor what changed, and terminal text is sent as text you can select and copy natively. The browser is a WebKit build that delivers frames to the compositor as DMA-BUFs without a readback, and agents drive it through Playwright. Alt+P is sort of like Raycast: browse apps, linked GitHub, websites, and SSH targets from it. You can watch the desktop at any point in time and rewind to periodic snapshots. To achieve this, the desktop records into a timeline file, a kind of structured video, and the VM takes snapshots along it. You can traverse back like a livestream to see what happened while you were away, then restore or fork the whole machine from that point. Agents can mark points on the timeline and checkpoint the whole machine before risky changes. Other things to try: ssh -t zydra.sh dino # the Chromium dino game via SSH tar -czf - -C ~ .claude .claude.json | ssh -T zydra.sh upload # bring your configs (includes your Claude login) ssh -o ObscureKeystrokeTiming=no -A zydra.sh # lower latency & forward your SSH agent ssh -p 443 zydra.sh # connect from a corporate firewall sshfs zydra.sh: ~/zydra # paid accounts: mount your home Everything runs on one dedicated server with one AMD iGPU, so there are 12 slots. When they're full you wait in a queue and can play Chromium's offline dino game. The paid plan is $40/month (+ tax): 8 GB RAM, 4 vCPUs, 80 GB disk, GPU access, with no time limit and a 3-day money-back guarantee. I'll be around all day to answer questions.

A "deepswapp" of a website has data from one website in a layout of another website. Deepswapp Browser allows users to seamlessly browse this alternative version of the Internet, today. Video: https://deepswapp.com/assets/deepswapp.mp4 The whole Web can look like Wikipedia, old Reddit, or your own website. Once deepswapped, the website transformation is reusable without AI. Single-file HTML page Only essential data rendered Synchronized tabs Synchronized scrolling No backgrounds No animations Data auto-refresh Image lazy loading This desktop app works on every platform (Docker images also available) and opens a separate Chrome instance, which mirrors opened tabs in the user's main browser. Several deepswapps are included with the download, so no AI subscription is needed for a test drive. A fresh deepswapp takes around 10 minutes and costs about $0.40c on deepseek-v4.1-flash. This goes down by half when deepswapping a known website. Tech side: fully in Golang, with AI-generated JavaScript never executing in the user's main browser. Roadmap: Web and Mobile access, even deeper swaps, parallel swaps. https://deepswapp.com
