Hey Everyone, At work, and for several of our employees at home too, we've been big users of shared storage. We have a big TrueNAS storage server at the office containing a mix of spinning rust and flash. In addition to SMB and NFS, we've been big users of iSCSI for our Linux and Windows servers and clients. But all of our employees use Macs, and due to the lack of modern iSCSI initiator software for Mac we were never able to utilize iSCSI for Mac clients. Existing legacy iSCSI initiators for Mac use kernel extensions that require turning off System Integrity Protection in recovery mode to install on Apple Silicon Macs. That's insane. You shouldn't have to severely sacrifice your Mac's security to use iSCSI! So, we built a high performance user-mode iSCSI initiator for macOS. Our solution is a sandboxed Mac App Store application that requires no Kernel Extensions, no drivers, no reduced security and no reboots to install. Introducing BeamDisk, the first high-performance user-mode iSCSI initiator for macOS without security compromises. BeamDisk allows you to mount LUNs from your storage server, NAS, or Enterprise SAN arrays directly to your Mac and have them show up as standard disks. I decided to test this claim with my app, NoMoreHappyPath (NMHP), against Claude on a real project. Here is the test: I built Acremuse, a commercial real estate analysis platform, with Claude Desktop and Codex as a reviewer. It is deployed and used today by a couple of investors. Then I wondered what I'd missed that might bite me later. ~ 374,000 Lines of program code - 1,070 Source files (Python and TypeScript) - ~ 11,400 Functions and methods - 3,067 Automated tests So I gave the same 374k-line code snapshot and the same brief to one Claude session that can use Codex as a reviewer and to my own tool, NMHP. My directive was the same for both: Analyze the code, find any errors/bugs, and list them by severity. Findings must be reviewed before writing the final report. The Results (Verified by an impartial, blind Codex judge): NMHP: 33 real issues found. 7 false claims. Claude: 10 real issues found. 2 false claims. Only 6 issues overlapped. Time & Cost: From the owner's go-ahead to the reviewer's pass, NoMoreHappyPath took about 74 minutes, including time lost while it found and worked around a defect in the product itself. The Python version NMHP was working on was 3.9, the OS version, and it didn't have pytest installed, which was needed to verify some claims. After 15 minutes of blockage, the CTO stepped in and told the agent to create a venv with Python 3.13, install the corresponding pytest, and move the project along. NMHP CTO reacts when 15 minutes pass without movement from agents. To be fair to Claude, Claude did create a venv from the get-go. Time & Cost: NMHP took 74 minutes and cost $24 in API spend. Claude finished in a few minutes for a fraction of that cost. And yes, NMHP takes over an hour and costs twenty-four bucks. But for a 374k-line codebase, finding 23 more real issues overall that vanilla Claude missed makes $24 a massive win compared to human audit rates. I know this isn't a benchmark; it's one app and one run each. I wrote a detailed white paper on it. But it confirmed my idea: an AI agent without a real process is not yet capable of building a commercially ready application, even with a frontier model and reviews that are initiated by the same agent.

hi everyone! I wanted to share what I've been working on these past 6~ years. TL;DR: Rust is great, but somewhere along the way, I learned that I was too dumb to read and write Rust. As I worked on larger and larger Rust projects, I also became frustrated with the developer experience of working in Rust (slow compile time), so I wanted a better way. Vu's language changed a bit over time but the core principles remained the same: 1. It should be easy to read and write 2. It should be memory safe 3. It should be fast to run 4. It should be fast to compile Here's how I approached each: 1. Vu is syntactically very close to Python. The ownership rules are the ones Rust has, but I personally find it a lot easier to parse and understand. I've tested this with various LLMs and found it can read and write Vu out the box because of the similarity to Python. 2. Vu uses the same principles of Rust. Every value has one owner, borrows can't escape or outlive what they borrow, and nothing changes while it's borrowed. 3. Vu compiles down to C at the end of the day, so everything runs approximately at C speeds. 4. vuc check on the compiler’s own source (about 21,500 lines of Vu), takes about 0.4~ s. This check covers parsing, type and borrow checking. cargo check on a Rust project that size usually takes several seconds from scratch. Then there are other opinionated language decisions. Vu has no macros, Vu's borrow checker is lighter weight than Rust's with simpler interfaces and generics. However, in the past few years, as Vu's language evolved and AI began to take over, I expanded Vu's principles to include a couple additional principles: 5. It should be secure 6. There are explicit language decisions in there as well that tries to prevent a host of security flaws that exist in other languages, e.g, integer overflow stops the program instead of quietly wrapping around. 6. The syntax of Vu is designed to be tokenizer efficient. In addition, when Vu checks throws errors, the errors are designed to be token efficient and written in a way that guides LLMs to more easily fix bugs, reducing turns overall. So, in summary, Vu is still experimental. The compiler is 21,500 lines of Vu and compiles itself. The standard library also has TLS, HTTP/2, WebSockets and a PostgreSQL client, all tested against Python’s implementations and hostile input. I think most of the pieces are there. We used to run chaos testing in our staging environments: inject faults in various parts of the system and see what breaks. We found issues like Kafka or Redis being unavailable for a few seconds could take the whole app down. But that kind of testing was expensive. It needed a well maintained staging environment. Engineers needed to know what to test. Most teams never actually did it. Over the last year, coding agents have gone writing some of my code to almost all my code now. Teams are shipping way more code than they were 6 months ago. Code review tools read the diff, but a lot of reliability bugs aren't in the diff. They're in how your code behaves when Stripe, Redis or the network misbehaves. And e2e tests usually mock those services out and test the happy path. Agents have made this type of testing a lot cheaper. And we will see more of this (kinda like security scanning / testing) How it works A full copy of your app per PR: Postgres, Redis, Kafka, SQS, S3. Working copies of your third-party dependencies: Stripe, Slack, Gmail and more. Traffic goes through our proxy, which lets us inject failures. The agent picks what to test: It reads every PR and writes down invariants that need to hold (for e.g. a customer should never be charged twice). It then injects faults likely to break the invariants. Bugs we've found We ran Opslane on some popular open-source apps and here are some of the bugs we have found: 1/ Twenty: deleting a workspace while Stripe is failing locks everyone out, and billing keeps going. Hi HN. Greg here. I've been a full stack engineer for 20 years. Now all I do is shuffle messages between users, my agent fleet, our dev pipeline.. back and forth. I miss coding, solving problems, reasoning, and having an understanding and a mental model of all the work I'm juggling. But this is the job now, and there's no going back. I don't exactly feel like a 10x engineer yet, but I am for sure a 10-tab engineer. I built (er, Claude built) Shufler to lean into my new reality. If the job is basically to shuffle things through a pipeline, why not have it be more fun. Each row on the 3D gameboard is one of your existing terminal sessions. The columns are the steps your work moves through: Brainstorm, Plan, Build, QA, Review, Merge, Deploy. Your shipped PRs get stored in a warehouse/depot. The main things flowing across the board are your issues and PRs: each one rides along its session/row as it moves through review, CI and merge, and anything waiting on you turns red. I tend to manage several PRs within each Claude/Codex session, and this makes it easier for me to hold onto a mental model of where everything is. It's also made daily standups much easier to read-out. I created a few skins/themes like a casino, a theme park, sky islands, a starship and a factory, because.. of course. MacOS, works with Claude Code and Codex CLI, and cmux and iTerm (tmux should work, but I haven't tested it). It doesn't try to replace anything you already use.. just makes the orchestration more fun. You can still shift focus over to your terminal sessions when needed, use your existing skills, MCP servers, etc. There's a 3D library-building in each skin where you can specify your markdown/context folders or files, and then drag and drop to check them out by your rows/sessions. I tried to be thoughtful on security, following patterns that I consider at work. No telemetry, and the only outside calls are your own gh calls to GitHub. Daemon only listens on localhost, and every action shows its command before it runs. MCP server is opt-in, and sending to other sessions is off by default; if you turn it on, every send is a preview plus a separate confirm you approve. SnapFire FSR is a full stack runtime that lets frontend teams write typescript and have it served via Rust. At my current workplace (10M+ DAUs), all we want to do was render composed strings from the backend to a browser using Typescript. Since Node 0.x (went I started with Node), things have changed, freedoms taken away and now security teams recommend to wrap your Node server instance with a sidecar or else your Node project will be blocked. SnapFire FSR changes that for us, no more sidecars. The idea is, you don't need a general purpose VM to compose a web page. Most complex transformations and communications are done by our services anyway. When you need complex computation done without a service then create native Rust functions and call it via Typescript. There is a long list of ideas from my past experience with frontend and backend that contributed to SnapFire FSR.
